Detailed description

Important Notice: Volunteers must be aged 18 or older. We are only able to accommodate volunteers from Monday to Friday, during the hours of 08:30 to 16:00.

Are you a dog lover looking for a rewarding way to spend your free time? Join our Canine Care team as a volunteer Dog Walker and keep our dogs healthy! Whether you are walking our dogs around our grounds or helping them burn off energy in our enclosed paddocks, you can make a huge difference to the lives of our dogs while they wait to find their forever homes.

What this involves:

  • Providing exercise and enrichment as requested by the Canine Carers
  • Fitting dogs with appropriate walking equipment, including flat collars, harnesses, and head collars
  • Cleaning up after the dogs in your care during walks and exercise sessions
  • Reporting any concerns about dogs’ behaviour or wellbeing to the centre staff
  • Reporting any faulty or damaged equipment to the centre staff

About You:

  • You are confident around dogs of various sizes and breeds
  • You have a positive and proactive attitude
  • You are reliable
  • You are conscientious and a team player
  • You are able to work on your own initiative
  • You feel comfortable working with, supporting and/or assisting other people
  • You are able to follow instructions
  • You have a good level of physical fitness as many of our dogs are large and/or strong breeds

We recommend visiting our website to get an idea of the types of dogs we have in our care before applying for this role. Most of our dogs come to us as strays and their history is unknown, so many of them are still learning basic commands and manners.

Please note, volunteers are not allowed to have their own dogs with them while volunteering with our dogs.

About Birmingham Dogs Home

Birmingham Dogs Home has been at the forefront of animal welfare in the Midlands for over 130 years. We care 24 hours a day, every day of the year to provide compassionate care to homeless dogs and meaningful community support for local people and their pets, now and in the future. We operate from two sites; one in Solihull (known as our Birmingham Centre) and one in Wolverhampton.
